Partner, Director, Senior ManagerIn terms of roles & responsibilties as well as compensation what are differences among Partner, Director, Senior Manager roles at E&Y Business Adviosry? Any idea how would a Senior Manager at E&Y match up (in terms of levels) at PwC or Accenture? Will it be also a Senior Manager or different?

Senior managers have business development targets, but won't lose their job if they miss their target. They may spend considerable parts of their time delivering work rather than selling it. £80-120kDirectors are much more heavily focused on selling work than delivering it, and their bonus reflects this accordingly. Directors who are not selling significant amounts of work are generally managed out. £120-150k + bonus.Partners are exactly what it says on the tin, they are partners in the business. Their focus is almost exclusively business development and they are responsible for bringing the business through the door, managing major client relationships, and driving the business forward. Low six figures for a new partner through to seven figures for the big boys who have been around a while and are at the top of the organisation.

Dear BAS,Thanks for clear answers. Some additional questions for clarity:(1) It seems senior managers do not get bonus. Is that correct / incorrect? What is EY rationale for this? (2) The range 80 - 120 K for Sr. manager is quite big. On what basis does EY slots an individual to a specific level? Does it primarily depend upon one's negotiation?(3) Do senior managers also qualify for car allowance in EY? How much is it? (4) To move from sr. manager to director - does it primarily depend upon how much new business a sr, manager generates? or can it also happen without that but as a director one takes up biz. development role. If move from Sr. Manager to Director is only dependent upon new revenues then ball park how much are we talking here....0.5 million, 1 million, 2 ??Thanks much in advance!

1. Rationale initially was that we were a growing business. Leadership did not want to have short-termist mentality about bringing the wrong business through the door just to make up the numbers. Now-a-days, the no-bonus policy means that Snr Mgrs who deliver a lot of work (high utilisation, low biz dev) are not penalised vs. those who do more biz dev and less service delivery.2. Range indicates where you are within your career. As senior manager is a grade where you could potentially spend 4-5 years (as you get closer to partnership), there needs to be room to reflect whether you're more of a "polished manager" or a "partner in waiting". Market conditions will also drive pay, of course.3. SMs get a car allowance. From memory, it's about 5K4. Director is a stepping stone towards partner. To get promoted to Director, you need to to be bringing in several million pounds of business a year. In general, you're not promoted to Director unless they are pretty sure you will be invited to the partnership.
