Hi Everyone, I am graduating this May from Brunel University, in Computer Science. My question is really advice, I am still unsure of what area of IT I want to go into and was hoping for some ideas from experienced people from the IT industry. I am not particularly keen on programming so would opt out of that, but enjoy databases, project management, website design.I completed a 12month Industrial Placement where I was a 1st/2nd line support analyst. I enjoyed the role but got a bit annoyed with the office politics and the low amounts of appreciation the people on the service desk receive.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.Winston

Project management is the way forward. However, you would have to wait 2-3 years for any meaningful responsibility. Grads with no comp science degree usually do PMO work for 2-3 years or UAT in large systems integration projects. As you have technical aptitude a company may want to take advantage of that. It would really depend on the project/business demands but database architecture/business intelligence is not a bad area to get into. Quality assurance is also an essential skill that is a nice to have going forward. Bear in mind that if you do not like office politics, or better say, you feel you can not deal with that PM would be out of question...

why not go down the technical route, become a system or enterprise architect

that could be a good option. However, to reach that level it may take 8-10 years...provided that the level of outsourcing of activities like programming, systems analysis, support architect tasks remains stagnant, which is unlikely.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for your responses, I was thinking more the project management but didnt know anyone already in that part of the industry, most of my friends and associates are in the support or consultancy sector.Im not to sure about the technical route, as I said before I did enjoy my placement as a support desk analyst but do not want to be stuck at the bottom doing help desk calls for years. Some of the people that were working there have been in the same position for 5+ yesars. Couldn't deal with the knowledge of no prospects.If I was to go down the PM route, what would be the best way forward, and does anyone know of good graduate PM positions?Thanks again for your responses they are all very much appreciated.Winston
