I accepted a graduate position, and signed a contract in Feb. Recently by chance, i have been offered a job in IB... m&a.... Obviously i will take the IB job, but what i'm wondering is the best way to explain the situation to IBM. (in the contract it says you have to give a one month notice period). I'm fully aware that this will annoy IBM HR staff, im just wondering the best way to break it to themThank you.

You've really got tickets on yourself, haven't you. Do you really think IBM is going to care - I think this is a robust enough firm to survive without you. Send them a short email, politely advising them that you have received an offer you cannot refuse. They will cross you off the list and will have fogrgotten your name by the next day!

I am assuming you have not started yet, in which case they will work on the theory that a certain percentage of candidates will not start. It you have started, you just need to speak to your manager/HR etc. it is really a much bigger deal to you than it is to them, you can be assured of that.

Thank you for your advice...to "get real", okay it might not be a big deal for them, but i wanted to be as professional as possible.

it's easy really, just tell them you have recieved an offer you can't refuse, thank them for the opportunities (if you have already started with them), and wish them the best for the future, then off you go...

if you have not started, you will be one up on a lot of people by telling them at all (it is not unusual for some people simply not to turn up on day 1). If you have started, you will soon be just a stastic - they may wish to do an exit interiview and you can make yourself available if they want one. you may come across IBM or some of the people again in the future so just make sure you do everything in a calm, concise way.it is really not a big deal yet. Whether or not you have started, you are nowhere near the point in your career where you are adding much value (no offence)
