Hello,I am working in the railway sector for one of the railway contractors.I am doing project engineering where it basically involves everything from bidding to handover of the project. I have been working for around 2 years after graduation. However I would like to move to consulting so that I can wider exposure (different sectors). I would like know which consulting comapanies can I look up to ..Most of the vacancies advertised around look for IT or Finance sector experience. Any advise is welcome..I am basically looking for names of few consulting companies where I apply with my background.

Hi Sid, it sounds like you would make a good consultant. With your pedigree, maybe you should go for one of the firms that specialises in project management and implementation assistance (some of this is actually more fun than strategy!)

Hi - i have done this move from engineering to consulting and most firms have some sort of engineering background practice. I know PA have good expertise in this field and others have supply chain practices where your skills may be of use. Best of luck.

Forgot to mention, I believe Arthur D Little are hiring at the moment. They do quite a lot of public sector / civil engineering type project work.

Can I just say that there's a chronic misuse of the word 'advise' on this forum. 'Advise' is a verb, 'advice' is a noun. It should read 'Any advice is welcome'. Thank you - you can now proceed with advising this engineer on how to become a consultant.

Dr D has a point…While I’d expect that most mistakes here of that nature are typos, and that most people who use this forum know basic grammar, I do think that things are getting in a bad state in this country. It seems that it is now acceptable to have plurals spelt with an ‘s. There is a sign for Taxi’s at Edinburgh airport, my local Dixons has a massive banner outside telling me that they sell TV’s, and I even noticed an isle in a major supermarket (can’t remember which one) which professed to sell Videos and DVD’s. I mean, the last one isn’t even a consistent mistake! I haven’t studied English since GCSE, I wasn’t all that good at it then and I’m certainly no expert now, but people’s general level of ignorance is starting to grate on me. Maybe I should start a gorilla graffiti campaign correcting all the mistakes I can find….P.S. Sorry about the threadjack.

It is not the grammar that is the issue. It is the fact that the general comments on here are not about how to answer a question posted but about smaller issues which can be easily resolved. So a consultant forum where is the value add in this behaviour? Someone asked about engineering to consulting not how can you or Dr D help them improve their gramamr!! Fact!
