I would like to hear your thoughts:I work in a very very hostile environment. People are arrogant, manipulative, backstabbing and always defensive. They are quick to make you look a fool in public, fastest at pointing the finger and even faster at claiming merit for work that wasn't thiers. Is this how it is in your office? Being 25, and having had just two jobs ( well, same job two companies ) I have found it to be the same in both my places. I work 80+ every single week, with at least 2 weekends a month. I often get called back into the office late at night ( 1am plus) - never get a thank you, never get a please or a well done .There are no friends here. I wonder, am I alone, or is someone in a similar boat?

Do u think this kind of job/work-life style is what you really chasing for in your life? If yes, accept the reality, play the game. But there are many other ways to live a rewarding, successful life.

Are your colleaues subject to the same demands? If so you need to decide whether this game is for you.If not, you may be being bullied, which can happen for any number of reasons, and it's probably time to leave anyway. This would not be giving up in anyway, there is huge benefit in spreading your wings and moving to another firm.

Now I don't want to come on here and preach to people but there is a simple, 4 letter acronym you can use to help you deal with situations like this. Next time you are witness to an incident which you consider to be backstabbing, manipulative or arrogant say to yourself WWRD. That's right What Would Rocky Do? Once you have the answer you'll find these problems will soon disappear.

Its life jiimbo, but not always as we knew it!Never been at all convinced myself that a very hostile environment gets the most out of people. There seems to be a fine line between challenging and demanding working environments, and one's that are basically dominated by a bunch of bullies. The two are actually very different.Being able to take a joke is one thing, being made to look a fool without fair reason is another. You should look around you and take stock of where you are at, and then consider what to do about it. You are most likely going to have to either stand up for yourself and what you contribute, or else find a place where that can be achieved without the backstabbing and all that you describe.Give yourself time to make up your own mind about this. Decide what tactics you can use to resolve it and when to use them (talking discreetly to others really can help). Then act on it.

Take the advise from me "NOT TO LET THE COMPANY TO USE YOU". I'm also 27 and did the same thing in past two years. Spending most of my life in the office, almost weekends and holidays and then I faced a big shock at work which really hurt me alot. I became so depressed and upset. Now I 've changed my way of working. I'm working in a multinational company where respect has been defined as one of the most important values though in practice we don't see it alot. Sometimes I think you have to know the game and politics to grow in an organization.Don't give up and be aware that you are not alone, same experience and same feeling here. Also take the advise to LOVE YOURSELF as I've learned to do it after some experiences. Maybe the new book called "Burnt Toast" could be useful also for you to read.Hope this helpsRegards

Have you ever thought that these things might be happening to you because of the quality of your work (too much input, zero output) and your (lack of ) personality. To make friends you need to get to know the person behind the job.

I agree with PBL (above), the lifestyle we adopt in this industry (consulting), is pressurised, fast paced and v v competitive, pushing the participants to ruthless group hungry attitudes In many ways it’s wrong, but attempt to see it from their view, you will find in many cases it’s an exterior means they adopt to survive it. Make friends, socialise, and excel in your position…….. if cant or wont. Then this is not the right firm for you. The industry is buoyant …… put your cv out there. Good luck

Come on its quite nasty to imply someone lacks personality or produces poor quality work if you dont really know the person consulting or the situation. Do not necessarily disagree with number8, myself, but its not necessarily helpful to write people off too harshly either.

Whatever you do with 'love' becomes a success. Over the next month, cultivate love for your creations, experiences, learnings, and meetings, and soon, you will feel better about your work. Also, everything at your workplace is a reflection of the repeated thoughts and images in your mind and consequent feelings. If you manage your thoughts and cultivate the smallest positive aspects of negative situations, you'll soon experience a very different workplace.
