Hello Advisors,I signed a permananet job offer and received a better one laters. Can I accept the second job offer and not join the first company. What does the law in UK say ? The first company has a weeks notice period in the initial 3 months probationary period, so I was thinking of giving them a weeks notice and resigning before joining ? In the worst resigning on the first day of joining ? What are the legal implications of the above tw options ? Please advice.

In your position, I'd call the first firm, saying that you have a better offer and intend to take it. And then state the two options available - either you don't start at all, or you hand in your notice on day one and leave a week later, wasting everyone's time and training budget. Suggest that the first option is the best for the second firm, as they may still have time to get a replacement for you.

Yes. You seemed to have already answered your own question on the legal aspects. If you do decide to do that, and I have no real idea who these companies are or the contractual circumstances, you would be well advised to call with some 'tact and diplomacy' if you reject an offer. It is standard advice and you would increase your chances of being considered a decent person after your brief spell.

This happens all the while. If the message hasn't been conveyed already by other posters, a phone call would be best. I doubt that the company will want you start if you're intending on resigning on the first day. You never know, they might even match the better offer if money is the only thing dragging you away.
