Hey all, i left a consultancy company on an amicable basis and was a senior analyst but had responsibilities of a consultant. Do you think i should be applying for consultant roles or analyst roles? If you looked at my CV you would think i was a consultant. What i am thinking of doing is when i get to the interview stage explain that i would take a:(1) Consultant Role(2) Analyst Role with promotion within a short amount of time if they happy with my work. (But i really dont want to go back to an analyst role)

Consultancy firms value career progression - so never take a a step back.

2 pennies worht - I agree and dont want to go back one. But would a consultancy firm think, if he was doing a consultant job thats fine. BUT we need to see that he can do one because he wasnt officially called a consultant at his last job?

Firms have all sorts of titles for the same job, so I think you'll be judged more on the responsibilities you had before and the years of experience you gained, rather than the job title you held. As per one of the other posts, consultancies like people who are on a fast-track career path - not people who are struggling to get promoted. So I would always look at jobs that are at least comparable to your previous job, if not a step up. Saying you'd be willing to re-enter as an analyst just smacks of desperation.Particularly in today's busy market, you don't need to take backwards steps just to get your foot in the door - if you've got good consulting experience you should get snapped up at an experienced hire level.Best of luck, Tony

Maybe, maybe not. Titles are different, people are different, attitudes are different - even within the same consultancy, it may depend on who you interview with, and how the individual practice is doing in recruiting. Focus your CV on responsibilities, skills and achievements rather than on titles and dates, and apply for the position you want rather than the one you think others may want you to take.
