I work for a major consultancy and I find that a lot of people have relationships at work. That is to say, male colleagues are married to, dating or even more casually sleeping with female colleagues.
Now do not get me wrong, I am not jealous and neither am I prudish. However when I see Senior management abusing their position to curry favour with young female analysts I think it is unethical. I mean the young females use the situation to rise up the ranks and the men use their seniority to their advantage.
I have never heard of a relationship in my consultancy where the female is higher rankng than the male.
What do you guys think? Relationships at work, are they a good thing or a bad thing.

i asked analyst at a recruitment event about that - and they confirmed that partners are often... partners :)Well not partner level, but you get the point. The consulting lifestyle is so all over the place that only fellow consultants could appreciate the pressures on your life and thus date you and marry you.If your other half is sitting at home while you fly your kite - that could cause tension.Company policy in this company was that you should not date anyone who has control over your career. But I mean it's just uber-networking isn't it?

When I worked for my previous employer, you used to see a lot of it on the Ministry of Defence jobs. Always some partner or associate partner with a much younger girl, who briefly did well in her career before leaving once everyone found out about it. One of these cheats even got an OBE for his services to the client ! Disgusting behaviour all round really - which is a large part of the reason I don't work for that consultancy any more.

Lots of that sort of thing goes on at IBM, which explains why we have so few senior female consultants.

Good or Bad....chemistry will always be at work....Be willing to pay the price for fallout....In times gone by, if the deal was ongoing one of the parties would move to another company....

They can be fabulous, but most are, on balance, bad. Not only can the fall out for you be appalling, it can make colleagues very uncomfortable too- I'm thinking about a partner who has just left one secretary for another. And the 2 women work together every day.....Though the thing that I really hate is people that presume that a partner sells you regularly because you're sleeping with him, rather than because you're good at your job.
