Internal consultancy within Corporates

Time for a change

Hi, I am quite curious and also interested in finding out about how the "internal consulting" market works from a talent/recruitment perspective. Personally my gut feeling is that this is probably a very network/contact based hiring market. The latest edition of the Top-consultant newsletter for Q4 2005 also lists this as a major trend in the market for consuling talent - especially with rates under pressure and room for pay-rises being capped. For years I have heard peers say that internal consulting opportunities within large corporates are growing. Same arguments were given about why pay the rates, why go thru' the learning curve and "norming and storming" phases with new providers and supplier teams, retaining internal IP and IC, etc.Would really welcome any suggestions, ideas, opinions, offers of assistance on how to approach breaking into this space and identifying which corporates are really serious about the value of internal consulting and empowering their internal teams to add business value + the obvious interest in who might be recruiting now or in the near future. Thanks

I wanted to do this too....Turns out a number of firms are closing their internal consultancies- e.g. Barclays, and others seem to be shedding good staff at a rate of knots e.g. Shell. Speaking to guys that have come out of it, they say people get in either as grads, as one of their placements on the training scheme, or because they were external consultants and were offered in house jobsGood luck!

I'm about to move into an internal consultancy role. You should be aware that few companies advertise these roles and even fewer advertise them as 'internal consultant' roles. The majority come about when internal change programmes are running or are being set-up, depending on the seniority of the roles, or as part of system implementations. My advice would be;1) Identify the industry you want to get into, ideally the company too.2)Use all the resources and networks open to you to find out what the company is up to in the area you're interested in.3)Get a name and a number and call.Headhunters may be able to get you into these roles, but I prefer getting after them myself; more fun!
