I am currently looking for a job, so I am getting a lot of calls from recruiting companies. Many recruiters ask to tell them the names of companies I am interviewing with and/or I have applied to. Should I disclose these names? If not, what would be the best thing to say?

How would you feel about your CV turning up again (and again) at a company where you have already been seen, or even, already have an interview? How does that make you look? Why waste the second (or subsequent) agent's time, since only one agency can be renumerated for proposing your CV. Ummm, why not be open with anyone you have represent you?

Your advice makes you sound like you're a recruitment agent. Recruitment agents want to know so that they don't waste their time with you if you've applied elsewhere. It's got nothing to do with your best interests. It's all about their own best interests. The problem is that you don't know whether the one agent you give your cv to will actually devote time to looking for you. So I would say tell them no. You're considering going to others, but haven't yet. Don't listen to Tricia.

For what it is worth, my own recommendation would be to work with just one or two recruitment agencies. When you sell a house, the estate agency is much more committed to marketing your property intensively if they know that only they stand to make a fee if the property is sold. If you use several agencies then none will spend time with you that they could be spending with a more promising candidate. In terms of being open with recruitment agencies, I think there are a lot of upsides to telling them who you are already talking to:
your CV will not end up being sent to the same firm twice (which makes you look desperate and / or not in control of your applications)
being able to communicate to their clients that you are being actively pursued by some of their competitors will make that client more likely to want to interview you - and more likely to be generous with the eventual salary offer if they think they've got competition
this knowledge gives the recruitment consultant a much better steer on the types of firms that interest you and therefore makes it more likely that the roles they propose to you in the future will be a close match to what you are looking forSo in short, my advice is to HELP THEM TO HELP YOU!!Best of luck, Tony
