Hi !I’ve worked in senior engineering roles for a global supplier of telecoms, Ericsson, for eight years.I have just completed an MBA and am trying to move into management consultancy. However, I have found this extremely difficult. The response from employers has been modest. There seems to be a reluctance to take on an engineer (despite having just completed an MBA). Could anyone provide useful advice and tips on how to make the transition from engineering to management consultancy ?RegardsThomas

Must be selective

be selective over who you approach and realistic about the level you wish to join.Accenture for instance, looks for relevant experience that someone of your level will have - working in an unrelated field for 8 years and a new qualification may be less attractive than someone with 4 years relevant experience. Also, you will now have MBA salary expectations that may be pricing you out of the market.Try one of the more technical consultancies or one that will recognise your 8 years in Telcos, BT for instance. You may have more luck

Hi ThomasI too am having extreme difficulties breaking into consulting. Although I have a different background than you (technical sales) I too have a MBA, a Bachelors degree, 15 years commercial experience gained across two continents in technical pre-sales roles and I can’t even get an interview let alone a job.The industry seems reluctant to take ANY risks, which you and I represent and to be frank why should they? From a business perspective it is important that the people they take on can generate revenue immediately and perhaps the perception is that you may be difficult to “sell” to a client. Having said that it also appears that the market is crying out for talented individuals but recruiters seem to have blinkers on and continually ask and look for the same skill sets in people! They seem reluctant to widen the net.Personally I am at a loss as to what to do and cannot offer you any advice apart from telling you that you are not alone.Hayden morris
