I successfully moved from IT to Management Consultancy. It depends on the type of experience, mine included project management and IT consultancy. The planned move included gaining MBA qualifications before joint a large consultancy. I've since found that the IT experience has been invaluable on all of my management consultancy assignment, adding-value to my clients and uniqueness to my profile. One weakness in IT staff is their inability to communicate outside the IT arena, it puts potential business clients/employers off. I suggest you truthfully assess your skills (business development will be an asset, analytical and people skills even more so) against those of a management consultant and work at filling the gap.
