Hi ppl,I currently handle pre-sales and business development for a large software service provider. I have 10 odd years of work experience. I have a passion to move into Management consultancy roles. However, my current resume will not allow me to do that. Will moving to a company which has both IT consulting and Management Consulting practice, will be a good idea? I potentially plan to use the IT consulting to move into Management consulting. Am I dreaming or this makes some sense to ppl? If it is possible, what kind of companies should I target? Advice much appreciated.

Hi,it all depends in which role you want to move into management consultancy. Furthermore which kind of management consultancy, IT-driven, business and organizational or strategy? Short overview of my opinion:Sales roles: more likelyDelivery roles: more unlikelyStrategy: unlikely at allBusiness: more unlikelyIT driven: more likelyResume: better go for IT driven companies like ACN,CG etc or think about consultancies you have been cooperating with your current employer. Maybe there are already contacts which you can use!

I successfully moved from IT to Management Consultancy. It depends on the type of experience, mine included project management and IT consultancy. The planned move included gaining MBA qualifications before joint a large consultancy. I've since found that the IT experience has been invaluable on all of my management consultancy assignment, adding-value to my clients and uniqueness to my profile. One weakness in IT staff is their inability to communicate outside the IT arena, it puts potential business clients/employers off. I suggest you truthfully assess your skills (business development will be an asset, analytical and people skills even more so) against those of a management consultant and work at filling the gap. Their are a number of the smaller consultancies who deliver hybrid services, seek them out on the Internet,
