Market Economics is a branch of Economics. There are economists in academia and there are economists in the commercial world. In fact some work in both. Similarly there are market economists in academia and there are market economists in the commercial world. In fact some work in both, either simultaneously or consecutively. To widen the picture, some people work in consulting and in economics at various times (be it in academia and/or in the commercial world). Please let me explain:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A Geordie walking along a road in the West Country comes across a shepherd and a huge flock of sheep. He tells the shepherd, "I will bet you half your salary against one of your sheep that I can tell you the exact number in this flock." The shepherd thinks it over; it's a big flock so he takes the bet. "973," says the man. The shepherd is astonished, because that is exactly right and says "OK. I am a man of my word. Take an animal." Man picks one up and begins to walk away. "Wait," cries the shepherd, "Let me have a chance to get even. Double or nothing that I can guess your exact occupation." Man says sure. "You are a government econometrician," says the shepherd. "Amazing!" responds the man, "You are exactly right! That is incredible strategic thinking. But tell me, how did you deduce that?" "Well," says the shepherd, "put down my dog and I will tell you." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------There are careers for consultants in market economies. Why not assume that there are at least some jobs in consulting for market economists? On a more general point there are far too many recruitment debates that seem to be all about: If a person has done one thing, can they do another? My suggestion when this is not clear from a few pages of CV is an interview(s). Ultimately the proof is in the pudding. There are some candidates and recruiters who should consider CV’s and interview invitations a bit more like Christmas cards, for want of a better comparison. My apologies to Mr Capp and others who may have heard some or all of this before, but your joke was the best I saw all day.
