Question

Is it true that strategy consultants are insecure around economist because economists understand market fundamentals and can therefore do a far better job because they have "they eye"?Are there any jobs for economists in consulting (apart from economic consultants)?

Not at all insecure - economic analytical tools are part of the strategy toolkit, but only part of it. Some, good, economists do indeed have strong insights into market fundamentals, and strategists can work well alongside them, but others derive their conclusions from assumptions that (thankfully) don't hold in real market environments, making their conclusions interesting but not always commercially relevant. But there are certainly jobs in the field for good economists and we regularly them - econometrics is pretty handy too. HTH

Question

I don't think a market economist would derive conclusions from assumptions that don't hold in the market. I think you're refering to academics. market economists work in the commercial world where the only assumptions made are forecasting assumptions (which are not specific to economists).I acknowledge your point nevertheless.

Market Economics is a branch of Economics. There are economists in academia and there are economists in the commercial world. In fact some work in both. Similarly there are market economists in academia and there are market economists in the commercial world. In fact some work in both, either simultaneously or consecutively. To widen the picture, some people work in consulting and in economics at various times (be it in academia and/or in the commercial world). Please let me explain:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A Geordie walking along a road in the West Country comes across a shepherd and a huge flock of sheep. He tells the shepherd, "I will bet you half your salary against one of your sheep that I can tell you the exact number in this flock." The shepherd thinks it over; it's a big flock so he takes the bet. "973," says the man. The shepherd is astonished, because that is exactly right and says "OK. I am a man of my word. Take an animal." Man picks one up and begins to walk away. "Wait," cries the shepherd, "Let me have a chance to get even. Double or nothing that I can guess your exact occupation." Man says sure. "You are a government econometrician," says the shepherd. "Amazing!" responds the man, "You are exactly right! That is incredible strategic thinking. But tell me, how did you deduce that?" "Well," says the shepherd, "put down my dog and I will tell you." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------There are careers for consultants in market economies. Why not assume that there are at least some jobs in consulting for market economists? On a more general point there are far too many recruitment debates that seem to be all about: If a person has done one thing, can they do another? My suggestion when this is not clear from a few pages of CV is an interview(s). Ultimately the proof is in the pudding. There are some candidates and recruiters who should consider CV’s and interview invitations a bit more like Christmas cards, for want of a better comparison. My apologies to Mr Capp and others who may have heard some or all of this before, but your joke was the best I saw all day.
