If you want to make a move from IT consulting to a career in business, then use an MBA to help you make that transition. That's what I did to move into a managing director role in a firm that has nothing to do with IT. I was in IT prior to this. You don't have to be a strat consultant to make this transition. That's a myth. Also remember this, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can teach you as well as the school of hard knocks, if your willinbg to learn from it. You will need a long term career in business where you can learn to take the punches and learn from the mistakes if you are to make a real impact in the world of business. Sometimes fast-tracking a career is the worst thing that can happen. I sometimes wonder whether fast tracks from consulting into industry is the best thing for industry because a lot of consulting is hit and run, without staying in it for the long term and learning from the possible mistakes and issues that crop up that only time can reveal. Sure, consulting exposes you to a variety of different tools and businesses, but I have always maintained that real indepth learning can only come from years of deep involvement. Consulting doesn't give you that.
