Can anyone give me credible advice on whether a specialist MBA is worth doing? If I plan on moving my way up the corporate ladder in the technology sector, would a specialist MBA focusing on Technology Management be better than a generic MBA? Thanks.

IT is a vocational occupation -you don't need a specialised MBA just the ability to keep learning new technologies. If anything, a general MBA (the way its meant to be) will provide greater connection and understanding with the other business functions! (-in my opinion).

I'm talking about a senior role in IT, such as a CIO. Wouldn't an MBA with a technology focus be better than a general MBA for this?

In my opinion no.At CIO/board level you should have a good crossfunctional appreciation of how business works and how your area of responsibility affects the operation of the business as a whole. There is nothing worse than a "techie" without business sense at high level. As a CIO you need to be defining information strategy not hiding in the details. Your technical experts should be telling you what's possible, how much it'll cost, how long it'll take and what risks there are. Your job as a CIO would be to determine what options you have, the costs & risks associated with them, how well they meet the Board's overall objectives, and then make a recommendation. You should know enough about IT to ask the experts the right questions, but you're more likely to get this from actual experience working in an IT consultancy after your MBA rather than being given a load of academic information which may or may not be relevant.

I agree with Freddy and Chogey, -besides an MBA lacking in the fundamental breadth of topics such as Business Policy, Accounting, Financial Management, Marketing, Operations, Organisational Behaviour, etc would effectivly be an MSc -no? (i.e. an MSc in MBA clothes so to speak!).

Thanks guys. I appreciate your input. It makes more sense to me now. I think a normal MBA will be the way to go.
