Tony - I've registered for the upcoming MCA fair with a view to moving from Engineering Prg Manangement to consultancy. Problem is that although I have some great experience on international development projects; both long term and short high-burn rate progs, I have no business quals besides a 4 year Engineering Degree. Although am registered with IMechE and have a pending application for full membership to the APM.I'm hoping to discuss face to face with some of the firms if they would consider people missing the "classical" consulting background - what information do you think it would be relevant to take along? In terms of compiling a portfolio, it is very difficult to demonstrate flawless and executed programmes due to the intangible nature of much of the work involved.

Ronaldo - one of the big things the firms are hoping to get from the Careers Fair is a wave of applications from candidates currently working outside consulting. Attracting more people into the profession is the only way that collectively the firms can meet higher client demand. Poaching staff from one another doesn't add to the industry's talent pool.

In terms of qualifications, asides from MBA graduates (who are the minority of consultants) most consultants do not have qualifications other than their university degree. So this need not be a barrier to entry for you.

My suggestion would be that you research the firms as much as possible prior to the event so that you appear knowledgeable about them when you arrive at the Careers Fair. I would leave your CV at home (you can apply for roles after the fair) and on the day concentrate on meeting people and establishing which firms are most interested in taking candidates with backgrounds in engineering such as yourself. Hope that helps - and see you on 7th!
