I have about 10 yrs experience in the upstream petroleum industry as an exploration and production geologist and a PhD from Imperial College of London (2nd or 3rd best in UK). I m thinking of starting a career in Management Consulting.Anybody bothered to express some thoughts and advice?

Hello Oil Man,The Oil sector is a good one to be working in at the moment with the high oil prices filling the coffers of the companies in this field. The options of a career change are several and since you have given very little detail about yourself - there is not much anyone can say. But since you are considering a career change, I presume you are not happy with your current job.Based on this here are a few pointers for you to consider:1) You could consider options of making your existing job more interesting by seeking more responsibility.2) You can look for a job with another company - maybe overseas in exotic locations such as Baku in Azerbaijaan or even Abu Dhabi or Qatar. The pay is great with good perks and you get a lot of respect from colleagues if you are good.3) If you are ready to take a risk - you could start your own outfit offering services to the multinational oil companies - particularly in emerging markets where good services are hard to find. Refer to www.rapid-solutions.net/4) You can change your entire line - this will depend upon your personal skills, aptitudes and interests. A good book on career planning will help to clarify issues. The world is your oyster - don't let anything come in your way. You are obviously intelligent and hardworking (PhD Imperial) - One good book I can recommend is "Who moved my cheese" - You can read it in half an hour but it gives good guidance on changing ones life.Wishing you the best.Moosa

Don't Shell have an internal consultancy based in London? I thought that industry experience was needed to join that group.... Perhaps I'm wrong though...
