Hi there! I hold an undergrad degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master's Degree in Telecommunications from the University of Toronto. I've worked for close to 10 years in the telecom and networking business and currently specialize in IP convergence (IP Telephony, Unified Messaging, Collaboration). I haven't ever worked in a consulting firm but would like to do it. Would my skills and background be valuable to a management consulting firm, say in the realm of IT strategy? What companies should I be looking at? How much could I ask for and what position should I expect? Lastly, are consulting salaries in North America better than in the UK or not really and is there a forum like this for us working in NA?Thanks.

Sounds like you have good IT/telecoms industry experience which consultancies generally like, esp. if they focus on this industry vertical. You might consider doing an MBA to help make the career change, although if you apply to consultancies and get in without having to do so it would save you time and money. Bit difficult to compare salaries because cost of living is less in North America. Try the vault.com site for a similar type of site in Norh America. GL.

To build on this, I have 20 years experience in Big food retailer and am now at Senior manager type level. I however have no degree.Does this prevent a move into consulting? SM
