I am currently considering a major career change from scientific research with a big pharma to consulting. Having had three years in this field i would probably look to join a big consultancy firm in either a graduate or analyst position. I would prefer strategy rather than a technology based firm as i have no previous programming skills. Any advice would be welcomed!

First, you're at least thinking on the right lines - a grad entry or indeed Junior Analyst post is the right level, depending on firm. I assume academically your achievements are very strong - possibly a PhD or MSc in addition to a first degree - this will be necessary to attract the leading strategy houses, but less so for more mainstream consultancies. With 3 years post study, either option is fine so long as you're flexible (within reason of course) on salary and seek to 'be moulded/developed'. Direct applications to the firms you're interested in are more likely to be successful than via recruiters at this level since it shows thought, consideration and initiative - and this coming from a recruiter! All the best.

I am a PhD in life sciences with 3 years experience in a Top 5 research Hospital in the US. Which firms are the most likely to hire life sciences canidates in London? I know Putnam Associates do almost exclusively biotech/pharma and PA Consultants have a strong life sciences practice.I assume the top tier firms all work on some biotech/pharma engagements. Any advise? Any boutique firm specialized in Health care in the London area? Thanks a lot

Many firms have a large life sciences practice or are specialised. First names that come to mind:McKinsey, BCG, CapGemini, Accenture, ZS Associates, IMS consulting, IBM, Westaway-GillisThe real question is - what are you looking for in the job? I would not worry too much about lack of programming skills - relatively easy to acquire; the question is whether you'd enjoy sitting behind a screen coding for 10 hours a day... (I do, but not every day!)

LEK and E&Y are stronger in life sciences than some of the ones that made it into your list, but your advice is spot on: work out what type of work you really want to do first, then find out who does it.
