Im a graduate with a 2:1 from UCL and currently doing a masters degree and still finding it hard to get into consulting. Granted I am aiming high but not unreasonably so (e.g. Accenture, PA, CG, IBM, Deloitte). Ive had some interviews and at some I was rejected straight out. It is difficult to get into consulting as firms generally dont recruit hundreds of grads a year unlike that seen in banking. Moreover, if you want to go into an specific area like strategy consulting its even tougher. Basically if you only have a 2:2 id def say do a masters. It will be difficult to get in on a good business related course somewhere but i think it may be your best choice. I think its the least you should do. Operational research - im not sure how much that will help, firms dont really specifiy specific subjects needed so if you are keen on it, go for it. If you prefer something else, well that will prob be just fine. Additionally, you should perhaps look to get some/more work experience to improve your CV and employability. Why not try and get a job with a small consultancy or in a role at a firm that requires skills similar to that needed in consulting. Any position that includes analysis, dealing with ambiguity, teamworking, and general interpersonnel skills should suffice. This is only my opinion. Id be keen to hear from other people. Hope this helps. Best of luck!!!
