Would like to ask a question on strategy consulting and get people's opinions. It seems like alot of people working in consulting would like to get into strategy eventually. I would like to understand what strategy means to everyone. my opinion is that strategy consists of many different types, you can have growth strategy, corporate strategy, M&A strategy, Business unit strategy (Supply Chain, Customer, IT, HR etc). What type of strategy do people really want to do? It just seems like 'strategy' is such a buzz word. Also, another question is at the strategy houses, what type of strategy work would a MBA graduate be doing? Do you get a choice? Thanks

Well, my understanding of "Strategy" is that its the whole thing! As a consultant in strategy you are going into businesses and providing core solutions to all the areas of business. Yes you are right to say that one can specialize in a particular area but the most important thing is to have an understanding of all the key areas. Hence when studing for a MBA you are provided with all those key area skills. You will note from your job search that many firms are offering specialized consulting work i.e. Supply, CRM, HR, IT. I'm not sure if thats what you wanted to hear but i guess its just my way of thinking. I don't work in strategy so I can't give you an indication of your work load but I have worked with alot of strategy consultants.!
