I am about to start an undergraduate degree in Business Studies, with management consultancy as a career in mind for when I finish. Could anybody please advise me on the types of modules I should think about taking when it comes picking my options, as I want become as employable as possible and to stand out from the other graduates when I complete my degree.

Hi Louise. As a recent graduate, the advice i can give you is limited, and should probably be taken with a pinch of salt. Firstly, I think that the fact that you are asking for advice so early on is a very positive step! I think you need to look into the different areas of consulting (for example Strategy, Opperations, Business Improvement, Change Management etc...) and decide which one most interests you. Have a look at the consultancy websites (for example Deloitte, Accenture, CapGemini, PA, or Mckinsey, Bain, BCG etc for strat firms)On there you will be able to find out the minimum entry requirements + the other skills they look for and mach them with the learning outcomes of particular modules. In generall they look for a solid accedemic record, along with strong analitical skills and high levels of numeracy, so as regards to your modules, seriously consider Economics/Finance etc. In terms of 'standing out above the rest' I think that your best bet is to try and get some hands on experience in the industry whilst at University. I think that most of the big firms offer internships, which aswell as giving some invaluable experience, would give you a good insight into the industry, and offer you the oppertunity to network with furure employers/clients (again, check out the websites) hope this helps, and good luck with your degree, It WILL be the best time of your life

It seems to me that to get into a Strat house or ex-Big 4 it's not a case of what modules you study, but more a case of at which institution you study. One of the saddest aspects of this industry is the preference for graduates with a 2:1 in History from Oxbridge to those with firsts from other good instiutions UCL, LSE etc in Business Studies or Economics. The message that is sent out loud and clear is that it is best to be a chinless Oxbridge wonder when you graduate, not a better educated and more relevant candidate. Apologies if this sounds bitter, but I myself went to Cambridge, and am now a Senior manager within the industry. The odd graduate candidate we take from a non-Oxbridge background usually knock spots off the rest, but the powers that be are scared to 'dilute' their reliance on the older universities. It's a shame. Really, it is.
