Ok people this is my problem. I'm qualifed accountant with 5 years tax experience. I'm desperate to get out of Tax and move into a strategy style role. As I have no experience and I'm thinking that an MBA from Harvard, INSEAD or LBS should help me (I've scored in the mid 700 on my GMAT). Is there another way or is the MBA the only route?? People from the strategy firms are not taking me seriously, I've even applied for graduate positions but still getting rejections!! What should I do! Any suggestions will be greatly welcome. Thanks.

Go for the MBA. In this market, too many experienced strategy consultants are moving consulting firms given that SI's and indeed big 4 firms (look at Deloitte acquiring Burlington for example) have acquired them (eg. ATK and EDS etc...). They will move for the same salary or less to get back on to a true strategy mandate work-flow. If you're talking about Ivy League business schools then (a) the milkrounds will give you exposure to the right strategy houses (b) you'll learn so much outside your comfort zone that you won't need to rely on the milkrounds, and can pro-actively research and approach firms rather than waiting and (c) your network (re. like minded students from all walks of life) will expand, providing yet further opportunities. Not forgetting what you'll actually learn of course!! All the best to you.

Thanks. Thats just what I wanted to hear! I think a MBA from one of the top 5 B-school should give me that boost over other candidates looking to get into SC. Cheers!
