#0 From IT to HR - I need advice please

Help please
02.08.5 00:00

Hello. I moved from a role in IT project management and support to a general manager position for a small NGO working closely with the public and private sector. After much soul searching and a personality profile assessment test, I came up with a strong interest and personality that suites an HR environment. I've wanted to move into an organisational development type role for a while now, and the test confirms what I thought. Can someone please give me advice on how to plot a way forward to move into OD? I've got seven years experience in IT (various technical management roles) and so far eight months experience in this general management role. I'm also currently busy with a degree in industrial and organisational psychology. How can I move into an OD role before finishing my degree?????

Hi green T. Yes I have considered change management. But how would my IT background be beneficial in a change management role? Only way I can think is managing projects in a technical environment that result in technical change. How much HR and OD is there in that? Thanks.

I can follow-up your last question perhaps with my experience. I've moved from an IT project management background (10yrs) to a programme management role that while partly supported by technical change is pre-dominantly focussed upon process & organisation change, so that's a possible route for you if you can't or don't want to switch immediately to HR/OD. In these types of activity though, you have to remember that HR are on the coal face when it comes to asking staff to leave so you have to be prepared for that as well as growth & development.
