I do hope you are joking when you say 'are you sure it wasn't 70k?'... The average partner salary was £702K in 04 increased from £620K in 03... Meaning the average partner increase was more than my total salary including car and benefits... Hey, I'm not bitter!

ok - I expect you're not being entirely serious :-) but in case you or anyone else is, two thoughts: (1) DON'T DO IT FOR THE MONEY! There are trade-offs involved that I really believe aren't worth it unless you get something else from the job as well (2) 700k may be average, but the distribution will be skewed - more junior partners earning less, fewer senior partners earning more - to be 'average' you would probably have 6-8 years in the partner role (exceptional individuals and practice areas notwithstanding).

Or to put it another way: What do you regard as a comfortable ambient stress level? How do you feel about the large "sales" aspect of the role? How much control do you want in your work life? How do you feel about always being the advisor, rather than the principal? -- And most importantly: How do you feel about a job you can never really 'switch off' from? It's a lifestyle choice as much as a career choice - really great if it suits you; truly awful if it doesn't.
