Start-Up

I am seriously thinking of joining a start up company specialised in providing added value, bespoke services in the field of strategy – positioning – analysis in a high growth market. I am aware of the fact that start-ups are risky options, but I also know that if they succeed the rewards could be huge and, if you join at a very early stage, you also get involved with or gain exposure to pretty much everything including company strategy, management, sales and marketing, product development, operations etc.

With the view of building a career in management consulting and taking into consideration that I am too senior to get a graduate position with an established firm and too junior to join as an experienced consultant, would joining a start-up give me some sell-able experience and be perceived as a good move?

Hi, I have recently set up a strategy consultancy, targeting the IT and Insurance sectors. My business partner and I are in our early 30's and have previous experience in Management consulting. It helps to have this experience, but many consulting companies also look for real business experience and industry understanding - so I would guess that you have lots of options open. We have plans to grow our business to 50 consultants within 5 years, and our values are fun, flexibility, value add and creativity in everything we do. Anyway - if you share these values and are seriously looking at joining a startup - then feel free to email me your CV, and I would be happy to discuss your details with my business partner.

Carlene, are you considering frsh graduates with bachelors and masters degrees at all, or just experienced hires. Are you in a position to offer work experience too? Thanks

i don't think it can do any harm (any experience counts these days and with hundreds of thousands of people looking for jobs you need to be one step ahead of them!). Just be aware of the downsides of joining a start up company - have they got sufficient backing, are they recruiting heavily and what's their future strategy? May I ask the name of this company?

Are you looking at experienced Project Managers at all? I have lots of blue chip experience (HP, Vodafone, ABN AMRO, Avaya etc)...
