Hi allI am 32 years old Civil Engineer with 6 years work experience in major infrastructure projects in the UK. I am now looking to change my career (like the 100's of Engineers out there) for more interesting and rewarding career in consulting.I though about doing MBA but this will require me investing time and money that I can not effort at the moment and it will not guarantee me a rewarding job if it's not in one of the top MBA school.Until recently, one of my colleague with more than 5 years experience in Engineering got a job as a Management Consultant in a respectful consulting in London, so I though I might have a chance to get a job now and maybe do MBA later on.My question is: Is it wise to relay on recruitment consulting to find a job and what is my chances?I would appreciate any advice or any one would like to share similar experience. Thanks

Go with the Recruitment Agencies if you are unfamiliar with the industry and the players. Or research the market, companies, and so forth to establish who would be best suited to you. The competencies learnt as an Engineer in Industry are transferable but I believe in Consulting you would require more rounded skills (e.g. understanding finance). The degree of skills depends on the level you come into Consulting (e.g. Associate, Consultant, Manager etc), the higher up would require more skills to satisfy that level. MBAs do help develop these skills, although largely theoretical, you would need some experience of these in roles.

I personally don't use Agencies as my experiences with them have provided me with zero value. This is not to say they don't work for others, else we would not have them :)Depends on what you want to do and take your skills. Consultancy has its challenges which I'm sure you would enjoy, but consider what companies you believe after your research would suit you. Civil is an exciting field, and can be lucrative, very lucrative. Good luck!
