I find it quite amusing how people continually bring up the same handful of people as examples of not needing a fancy degree to be successful - Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates - not quite what you'd call a representative sample.Of course the point they make is correct, but so what, it is entirely missing the bigger point, not least when you consider that this is a consulting board and, as such, is viewed primarily by consultants, not entrepreneurs.The simple fact is that yes, many many people with lesser or no qualifications could do many many jobs that require the Oxbridge degree and Harvard MBA. But hiring is expensive and time-consuming, so I as a recruiter for a prestigious company will use education as a very simple and consistent screening tool, against which people cannot object on any legal grounds. Hence the need for the 'life's not fair' rants on anonymous message boards
