I was hopeing someone could offer advice regarding salary negotiations. I'm attending a meeting/interview tomorrow with the chairman and the CEO of a niche consultancy in London, I'll be enterting the strategy dept. I've been told unoffically that I have the job and this is just a final fit check with the top guys - I've also been told that salary will come up. The pay band is 35-55K and how do you ensure you'd don't price yourself out of teh market - I'm looking ideally for 40-42KAny one have any experience/thoughts? thanksLex

Lex,It would seem to me your ideal scenario is well within their stated range, so I'm not sure what the problem would be if you ask for what you want.Im my humble experience, if they can afford to pay up to 55k, and you've 'just about' got the job, I don't see the harm in asking for 50.... they can only say no. Alternatively if you think there is still the significant risk of being rejected from the job entirely, then say something vague about 'you've heard the pay band is 35-55k and were hoping for something nearer the upper end of that while being inrelation to your experience'.....The real issue (again imho) would be if you state 42 and they pay you 42 but could have afforded more (or even scrip and offer a few grand less)- while understandable purely from a cost control basis, imagine the moral boost you would receive if you ask for 42, and they offer you 44 - they still save 11 grand off what they might have paid, and they get a hugely motivated employee from day 1....These things are always 2-way and their actions will indicate liekly relations in the future. Those that dont ask, generally dont get - but it is a delicate balance....D.

...oh, and I'd only talk exact figures if they talk about them first or ask directly.....I know some people/cultures/nationalities have different views on this, but again imho here in the UK, its probably best to wait until asked before launching into exact number discussions.Unless of course they dont ask, until which point at the end of the interview you could ask something about 'will there be any further interview stages either with my potential colleagues, or even with HR to discuss remunerations and conditions?'.......

Mmh, quite large bandwidth...what's your background, any significant work experience? If no, your expectations are maybe too high, if yes you can go for that or even more. Try to figure out during the session if they really want to have you (I know this is rather difficult and these guys have learned how to hide their intentions)...and be careful at the same time: health check is good, but these guys have the final go/no-go!
