Could anyone tell more abot the above, I am about to go for an interview, making a massive career decision whether to join an investment bank with my chartered background or change into consultancy? Is it really that bad at IBM? I am shocked.

Only you can answer the question about consultancy versus investment banking. In terms of consultancy, there are many alternative firms to join other than IBM. Given your ACA background, would you not be a better fit to join one of the consulting arms of the Big 4 firms ?? I’ve never worked for IBM, but friends of mine have, and they said that the whole atmosphere was not pleasant there: very political, limited training, bonuses and pay rises that rarely materialise, all resulting in a high staff turnover rate. Others will argue that IBM gives you the flexibility to work across all parts of the IT sector, and that the brand is instantly recognisable on a CV. Hope this helps you with your decisions …

Would agree with most of the above posting. The IBM brand is certainly well recognised, but not necessarily for consultancy. One only has to look at the risible “The Other IBM” advertising campaign to see that even IBM themselves acknowledge that BCS will never be a credible independent consultancy. My advice: look elsewhere.

Thomas/JulianThanks for the above. I am most certainly equipped with questions for the end of the interview, if I get a chance that is...

The interviewers will make lots of soothing noises, and assure you that all is well. Its only once you're inside that you find out the truth. I suggest you ask around to see if you could talk to an insider to get an unbiased view. Perhaps your old Uni Alumni office might help put you in touch with someone there.
