Hello!I want to work in IT Consulting. I realise that there is currently solid growth in hiring in the consulting arena, but will my lack of consulting exerience (i.e. from a consulting firm) hold me back?I have 4 years IT (development) experience, which I gained from a banking multinational. I left last year to study for an MBA and I am now working in competitive intelligence (which is client facing).Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, your experience sounds good to me. Most firms would jump at the chance. you just need to avoid the HR depts., as most are tuned only to a particular buzzwords and cv formats, trying approaching consultants directly or at recruitment events.

Hmmm... obviouly I am going to disagree with anon's comments about recruiters! From the little you've said, I think there would be a lot of interest in your CV. Despite anon's experiences with HR (I've had 'em too), there are some recruiters out there who are actually part of the business rather than part of the HR function. These guys and girls know their stuff, and know what they are looking for. Do your research on who is specialising in this area - probably sensible to look first at the firms with a strong IT/SI arm - they usually have a more business focused consulting arm too... Not suggesting anyone in particular, but in the top 10 you are looking at Accenture, IBM, Xansa, Atos, Cap Gem, PA, etc - the old "Big 4" probably to a lesser extent, (finance consulting is still their core business). And don't forget the smaller niche players, there are lots of opportunities there too... good luck!

Thanks for your help, anon and RecruitGal! Much appreciated. Are there any essential IT consultancy-related skills (e.g. analysis, team working etc) that I need to highlight in my CV? Or will this vary between firms/roles applied for? Cheers...
