As a self-confessed 'experienced' person (34), it seems that this site is overwhelmed by graduates looking for their first or second step. I am trying to switch from internal consulting role in a private business into a more traditional consulting background. I have all the necessary experience - MBA etc, but would like to start at least some way up the ladder. Am I being too optimistic? Just because I have some 'life signs' in my face, will I be discounted even though I may be a better choice? I would appreciate your honest views.

Hi Gmac !! Many consultancies, esp the bigger ones, just want bright new things that they can mould in their own likeness, or more experienced hires that can bring a book of business with them. However others, such as my own company PA, are actively recruiting people with "real life" experience. They often bring the depth of insight and knowledge that purist management consultants can't. Take a look at our website, which is www.paconsulting.com, and if you like what you see click on "Join us", and we will take care of the rest !

I'd point you in the direction of Atos Consulting too. We very rarely take on graduates, and prefer people with industry experience (on the basis that we can teach them the consulting side if we need to). To be fair, you'll probably find the same at CapGem and Deloitte. Good luck!

GMac, You are in on an important quandary within consulting - how to attract (valuable) experience, and mould youth into the companies image/career path. Plenty of experienced people break into consulting later in life, they have more to offer after all, the key is to fit in with the company you are aiming at and to show how your experience will be of value to them - then negotiate start point/progression. Hope this helps, it worked for me!

I am 57 and Ifeel with the experience I have is invaluable and there is a niche for mature consultants today. Short trem contracts or if you are looking for a permanent job you should be considered more reliable and stable against a younger person.

Cheggers, thanks for the advice regarding Atos. I carried out the instructions to the letter, but unforunately have not yet received a reply to my applications. Is this the usual standard of service expected from Atos? Hope you can advise!
