I've been working in industry for 5 years, and I'm currently thinking of moving into consultancy. However having looked at comments on the website Where Women Want to Work (www.www2wk.com)it seems that sexism is rife in most of the management consultancies. Is this fair ?

Carla, had a quick scan of the site you referenced and couldn't find the negative comments on sexism in consulting. Sound like they are one-sided though. Many many consultancies are seeing increased recruitment of female consultants - and improving lifestyle / flexibility as a means of retaining them post maternity leave - as a key goal right now. Accenture and Deloitte are just a couple of the brands where I can immediately think of major policy drives in recent years to improve the male / female split of the business and ensure gender equality. So the situation is nothing like as bad as you may have been led to believe.

What it would be fair to say is that most consulting firms do have more male consultants on their payroll than women. This isn't going to change overnight - and indeed some would say that the lifestyle compromises that consulting demands do inherently make it a career path that women may choose not to pursue once they have a family.

From my own years in consulting I would say that many of the female team members I worked with were amongst the most talented in the firm - and were fast-tracked accordingly.

As with everything in life, I guess you will always be able to find people that have had negative experiences and who will want to vent their frustrations. But for every disillusioned person there are more than likely dozens and dozens of others that are very happy with their lot... Hope that helps Carla - and good luck. Tony

Thanks for that Tony. However, if you look at the boards commentary for Accenture, IBM, and E&Y in particular, there seems to be a lot of women out there who view a dissonance between what the organisation's stated policies on diversity and the reality is. This, I would find concerning. Anyone else have any thoughts?
