Hi guys. Can anyone, particularly those working in the company itself, suggest few points that differentiate IBM from its competitors and make it stand out please. Thanks a lot.

What IBM has over others is a “hire and fire” mentality, as evidenced by the recent mass exodus of PwC Consultants, and the 13,000 firings this week. It is an organisation where consultants are encouraged to ensure that the solution they derive contains a large slew of IBM hardware and software. Why wouldn’t you consider joining a more reputable firm ?

I think that's a little harsh...IBM is far too large a company for you to be passing judgement on two areas of the whole business.IBM is a large company and has to make decisions according to the business climate. It is an extremely good employer. It's the only company I know that has such a variety of job opportunities - I know one employee who went from software engineer to lawyer.

Whatever about the rest of the IBM business, BCS in the UK is a horrid place to work. Trust me, I work there. Like most others still here, I'm looking to get out too !

I've heard some pretty terrible things about the culture of BCS too. I presume that IBM are aware of the problems and are doing something about it, but it must make recruitment difficult.

old IBMer now with ACN

Hahahaha! What an utter load of crap!!! Hire and fire my @rse. ACN is much more ruthless! IBM advantages are that you really do get the opportunity to work globally (if you are good) and the calibre of people is good. However, the pay is rubbish compared to ACN and you don't move up the ladder so visibly quickly, the consultancy career path is nowhere near as defined. ACN - you will work in UK and Ireland and will not get the chance to travel in EMEA.As for being driven by hardware sales, well, IBM hardware sales guys will make a pact with ACN if it means they can sell a server. In the BCS side you are NOT pushed to sell hardware. You are selling services.Mass exodus of PWC consultants is due to the upturn in the consultancy market, there is high churn everywhere. 13,000 redundancies is due to an EMEA restructure. Nothing to do with 'hiring and firing' and no redundancies in BCS.
