i graduated last year and work since in a think tank as a research assistant in the field of economics. i decided to go into consulting and started filling in the online applications for some of the big firms. how does it work in those companies, do they consider online applications or are they just put in a database and never looked at? how is the best way to apply?thanks a lot

We do look at them - particularly at the moment when everyone is recruiting! We love direct candidates - they cost us less money! Having said that, if you are new to the consulting industry, it might be sensible to speak to one or two of the big agencies to discuss your options and get a better view on where you might fit. I recommend BLT...

RecruitGal, I notice you mention agencies in the message above. Can you recommend any other agencies that would be good to contact for entry level consulting, especially for operations and supply chain consulting roles?

Ah.. Agencies: the bane of a recruiters life. For every good one there are about twenty cowboys out there, so picking carefully is very important. BLT as I say are very helpful. They almost always manage the relationships with both their candidates and their clients organisations very well, and get consistently high ratings from my team. Other good ones, who might be helpful for entry level supply chain roles? I've just done a quick poll around my team, and the following ones might be worth a look - Purchasing and Supply Chain, Circle, Prism and a new player on the market, Venetia. Ask them lots of questions before you agree to sign up with them... and good luck!
